Buying A Home Near Laning

The big real estate Web sites do a great job of sorting available homes by price and zip code. They can help you winnow out condos and co-ops, and the foreclosures that still seem to dominate the search results. But if you really, really want to send your kids to one particular elementary school in Verona, you’re out of luck on the search sites. Remarkably, perhaps, in this age when so much information is so easily searchable, nobody has thought of building that in as a filter.

That’s where we come in. Over the next few weeks, MyVeronaNJ will be sorting Verona’s residential real estate listing by elementary school, starting with Laning Avenue. The reason is quite simple: Laning has been in my family a long time. I went there, once upon a time. So did my sisters, and my dad and most of my other relatives.

It’s one of Verona’s biggest elementary schools, in terms of enrollment and floor space, and the most handicapped accessible, with a huge gym added just two years ago. If you want the official statistics on what kind of school Laning is, click here.

Now for the houses. The Laning district, roughly speaking, is the northeastern corner of Verona. It tends to have modest-sized homes, and some of the oldest homes in town. Here’s what’s available for sale now, arranged in price from low to high:

200 Bloomfield Avenue. Four beds, two baths. Victorian detail. Near baseball field. $315,000.

18 Highland Terrace. Three beds, one bath. Dead-end street just around corner from school. $345,000.

36 Linden Avenue. Three beds, three baths. Original woodwork. $375,000.

67 Newman Avenue. Three beds, two and half baths, corner lot. $414,000.

31 Cumberland Avenue. Three beds, one bath and a detached two-car garage. Price just cut. $414,900.

12 Otsego Road. Three beds, two paths, front porch. $424,900.

16 Newman Avenue. Four beds, two baths. Front porch and back deck. Price cut to $429,000.

28 Cambridge Road. Three beds, two and half baths, back deck. $439,000.

74 Otsego Road. Four beds, two and half baths, eat-in kitchen. Price just cut. $444,900.

18 Nassau Road. Three beds, two and half baths. Remodeled kitchen. $445,000.

26 Montclair Avenue. Three beds, one bath. Dead-end street. $459,900

8 Witherspoon Road. Five beds, four and a half baths. Large finished basement. $524,900.

10 Otsego Road. Three beds, two and half baths, open house this Sunday, September 26, 2-4 p.m. $525,000.

20 Newman Avenue. Three beds, three baths, pool and patio. $549,900.
