Essex County officials said today that the Fairfield police officer who was critically wounded in a shooting Saturday night thinks he was singled out for the attack. Gerald Veneziano, who was not wearing a bullet-proof vest when he was shot, was awakened from an induced coma today. But Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said investigators don’t now know why the officer confronted his attackers in an empty parking lot rather than going to the nearby police station.
